On October 7, students of the Faculty of Digital, Educational and Social Technologies at Lutsk National Technical University met with a native English speaker, Garry DeLaura.
Future philologists, journalists, and psychologists attended the event. The guest works as an aviation engineer at an airport, where he is responsible for inspecting aircraft before departure.
Although Garry has no family ties to Ukraine — his relatives are from the USA and Japan — he has become deeply interested in our culture and traditions and has truly grown fond of Ukraine.
During the conversation, Garry shared that he enjoys Ukrainian cuisine, though some of our customs and mentality are unusual. The American admitted that learning the Ukrainian language is quite challenging for him. Still, he already knows a few words, such as "дякую" (thank you), "будь ласка" (please), "па-па" (bye-bye), "красуня" (beautiful woman), "красень'" (handsome man), "добрий день'" (good afternoon), and "собака" (dog), and his favourite expression, however, is "шо-шо" ("what what").
The students had the opportunity to ask Garry questions on various topics. In response to the question, "How did you feel when you learned about the Ukraine war?" Garry said he was shocked and never expected such a thing to happen. He also mentioned that he had hoped for greater support from the United States. Still, now he admires the courage of Ukrainians and continues to closely follow the situation in our country.
The audience was also interested in the guest's professional experience. Garry explained that before graduation, all aviation engineers must pass a difficult test, which has to be retaken in case of any mistake. According to him, this experience taught him perseverance and responsibility.
The meeting took place warmly and was friendly, leaving everyone with pleasant impressions and genuine emotions.
