The training of candidates for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy is carried out:

  • – in the postgraduate (adjunct) programme of a higher educational institution (scientific institution) in a full-time (daytime, evening) or part-time form of study;
  • – outside postgraduate studies (for persons who professionally carry out scientific, scientific-technical or scientific-pedagogical activities at the primary workplace in the relevant higher educational institution (scientific institution).

The training of candidates for the degree of Doctor of Sciences is carried out:

  • – in the doctoral programme of a higher educational institution (scientific institution) in the full-time (full-time) form of study;
  • – by independent preparation of their scientific achievements for defence.
  • The training of persons in postgraduate (adjunct) and doctoral studies is carried out:
  • – at the expense of the state budget (by state order);
  • – at the expense of funds from legal entities or individuals (under the terms of a contract, in particular, for the funds of grants received by a higher educational institution (scientific institution) for conducting scientific research, which envisages the training of candidates for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy or Doctor of Sciences).

Scientific and methodological support and organisation of postgraduate activities (adjunct) and doctoral studies of higher educational institutions (scientific institutions) are carried out by their scientists (scientific, scientific-technical, technical).

The standard training period for a Doctor of Philosophy in postgraduate (adjunct) studies is four years, and the training for a Doctor of Science in doctoral studies is two years.

Postgraduate (adjunct) or doctoral studies involve a person completing the relevant study and research-oriented or scientific programme of a higher educational institution (scientific institution) in a particular speciality and conducting scientific research. An integral part of the study research-oriented and scientific programme of postgraduate (adjunct) studies and the scientific programme of doctoral studies is the preparation and publication of scientific articles.

Postgraduate (adjunct) and doctoral students conduct scientific research under an individual plan of scientific work, which determines the content, deadlines and scope of scientific work, as well as the planned term of defence of the dissertation during the training period in postgraduate (adjunct) and doctoral studies.

The individual plan of scientific work is agreed upon by the student with his/her scientific supervisor (consultant) and approved by the academic council of the higher educational institution (scientific institution) or the academic council of the relevant structural unit within two months from the date of the student’s enrolment in the higher educational institution (scientific institution).

The individual plan of scientific work is mandatory for the student of the relevant degree and is used to assess the success of the planned scientific work. Violating the deadlines for implementing the individual plan of scientific work without good reasons provided for by law may be the basis for the academic council of the higher educational institution (scientific institution) to decide to expel the postgraduate (adjunct) or doctoral student.

Training in postgraduate (adjunct) and doctoral studies is completed by the defence of the scientific achievements of the postgraduate (adjunct) or doctoral student in a specialised academic council. Students have the right to choose a specialised academic council.

Postgraduate students (adjuncts) and doctoral students enjoy the rights of students for higher education, as defined by the Law of Ukraine “On Higher Education”.

To properly conduct scientific research, postgraduate students (adjuncts) and doctoral students also have the right to:

  • – free access to all types of open scientific information available in higher educational institutions (scientific institutions), libraries and state archives of Ukraine;
  • – receiving methodological and substantive scientific consulting on their research from a scientific supervisor (consultant) for postgraduate students (adjuncts) - to a clear division of responsibilities between scientific supervisors if the academic council of a higher educational institution (scientific institution) appoints two supervisors;
  • – safe and harmless conditions for conducting scientific research, provision of a properly equipped place for scientific work;
  • – academic mobility, which is implemented by the Regulation "On Approval of Regulation on the Procedure for Exercising the Academic Mobility Right", approved by the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated August 12, 2015. No. 579 (Official Gazette of Ukraine, 2015, No. 66, p. 2183);
  • – academic leave, in particular, due to health reasons concerning pregnancy and childbirth, to care for a child until he reaches age three, following the legislation.

Postgraduate students (adjuncts) and doctoral students must fulfil all the obligations of higher education students, as defined by the Law of Ukraine "On Higher Education". To ensure the proper conduct of scientific research, postgraduate students (adjuncts) and doctoral students are also obliged to:

  • – adhere to the moral and ethical norms and standards of behaviour of researchers in the relevant field (profession) established by the higher educational institution (scientific institution);
  • – to carry out an individual plan of scientific work and systematically report on the progress of its implementation at a meeting of the department, department, laboratory or other unit of a higher educational institution (scientific institution), which is authorised for this by its academic council;
  • – to defend their scientific achievements within the established time in the form of a dissertation (for postgraduates and associate professors) and in the form of a dissertation, a published monograph, or in the form of a collection of articles published in domestic and international peer-reviewed professional publications (for doctoral students) in a specialised academic council.

Postgraduate students (associate professors) and doctoral students have the right to participate in competitions for grant support for scientific research and scholarships established in honour of outstanding figures in science, education, culture, and public figures, as well as established by the President of Ukraine, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, state or non-state bodies, enterprises, institutions or organisations.
