The main goal of the “Open Practices, Transparency and Integrity for Modern Academia" (OPTIMA) project is to implement Open Science practices in Ukraine to improve the quality of National higher education services.

In general, the project aims at improving the quality of higher education in Ukraine by increasing the level of academic integrity through bringing open practices and transparency to relevant content and services, as well as through the modernisation and internationalization of Ukrainian HEIs. We consider introducing open practices as a quality assurance process and their means (IT solutions and international virtual community) as a quality assurance mechanism.

The project includes 3 specific objectives:

  1. Introducing a new quality assurance mechanism – an online open peer review platform for transparent research results in evaluation at academic conferences in Ukrainian HEIs.
  2. Foster EU-Ukrainian cooperation and internationalization of Ukrainian HEIs by building an international online virtual community of peer reviewers and researchers within the online peer review platform.
  3. Raising awareness on academic integrity and Open Science, improvement of open practices and Open Science skills at Ukrainian HEIs and society at large through the implementation of new subjects on open practices within modernised academic courses and open online courses.

The main goal: To contribute to the modernization of the higher education system in Ukraine by introducing university centers of excellence to promote European educational innovations through professional certification of university teachers.

The project includes 3 specific objectives:

  1. Modernise the existing system of professional development and certification of university teachers in Ukraine by establishing 9 independent Teaching Excellence Centres (TECs) and linking them into a network, which will improve the quality of teaching in universities.

The creation of the CEC will allow university teachers to get an alternative, high-quality, and affordable opportunity for professional development and certification with an expanded choice of venues. This will increase the motivation to continuously improve professional skills, use successful European experience to improve the learning process, and ensure higher quality education. The WDC and the ever-growing pool of graduates will be able to provide a broad and sustainable impact on the professional development of teachers in the Ukrainian higher education system. The project will improve the educational infrastructure (opening of 9 WDCs) and create conditions for increasing the capacity of higher education institutions. The European partner universities will facilitate the implementation and adaptation of international experience throughout the project.

  1. Implement professional certification programs for university teachers based on the best European practices and educational innovations to ensure teaching excellence.

Together with European and Ukrainian experts, a teacher certification program will be developed. The evaluation of teachers during the internship will be based on European standards. All certified teachers will be entered into a specially created database. The project will develop professional standards for university teachers and propose mechanisms to improve the regulation of university teacher certification.

  1.  Develop and pilot a new teaching excellence program, including course descriptions and MOOCs, that addresses the needs of the academic environment in Ukraine and leads to improved quality of university faculty certification.

The curriculum of the professional development program should meet the current challenges in higher education and take into account the professional profiles of a modern university lecturer. The certification will improve teaching skills based on European educational innovations. The learning process should become richer, more interesting, and more useful for both students and all stakeholders. Universities will receive qualified human capital trained in the EU. The system of pedagogical skills development will be improved. The introduction of new certification processes will encourage teachers to grow personally and professionally.

Expected result:

A comparative study was conducted.

1. Developed a strategy and model of teaching skills.

2. Selected coaches from the EU.

3. Certification authorities have opened.

4. Professional standards for university teachers have been developed.

5. Improved regulations on the certification of teachers.

6. A curriculum for improving teaching has been developed.

7. A methodology for assessing certification has been created.

8. A group of listeners was created.

9. Accredited certification programs.
